Joe on Education

Statement

Date: Sept. 6, 2012
Issues: Education

"A fair, accessible, public education system will enable all citizens and residents to become responsible citizens and contribute to society and to a sustainable economy. Education should help us discover, cultivate, and develop our talents and interests. It should help us enjoy leisure as well as work. It should facilitate a sustainable, fair, and equitable society and economy.

We need to significantly improve the training and preparation of teachers and, even more so, of administrators. We can learn from Finland and other nations that have great education systems. Good teachers must be given the freedom and incentives to teach - administrators and government should get out of their way. The resources are there, although some states, including Utah, need to more fully commit to funding education.

A truly educated public is indeed the future of the states, the nation, and the planet. Our problems with education are similar to those with health care. It's a question of vision, direction, and commitment. "
